Over een periode van twintig jaar werden in de ziekenhuizen 468 achtereenvolgende MPM-patiënten gezien. De gemiddelde leeftijd was 73,0 jaar en het histologisch subtype was epithelioïd (80,3%), sarcomatoïd (6,2%), en bifasisch (13,5%). De mediane neutrofiel/lymfocyt-ratio (NLR) was 5,8; de systemische inflammatie-index (SII) was 1.836; en de gevorderde-longcarcinoom inflammatie-index (ALI) was 29,6.
De mediane overall survival was 13,0 maanden. Factoren die in univariate analyse geassocieerd waren met slechtere overleving waren leeftijd hoger dan 70 jaar, persistente asthenie, hemoglobineniveau lager dan 13 g/dl, non-epithelioïde histologie, en de volgende hoge-inflammatie geassocieerde criteria: CRP hoger dan 25 mg/l, leukocytengetal hoger dan 109/dl, NLR hoger dan 5, SII hoger dan 1270, en ALI lager dan 18. In multivariate analyse waren leeftijd, histologie, hemoglobineniveau, leukocytengetal, ALI, en NLR onafhankelijk geassocieerd met overleving.
De onderzoekers concluderen dat de prognose van MPM sterk beïnvloed wordt door systemische inflammatie.
