Het Danish Nurse Cohort includeerde 25.698 vrouwelijke verpleegkundigen in de leeftijd van 45 jaar of ouder. De vrouwen werden gevolgd van inclusie tot datum van diagnose CRC, overlijden, emigratie, of 31 december 2018. Tijdens 542.698 persoonsjaren follow-up werd in 863 deelneemsters (3,4%) CRC gediagnostiseerd. Bilaterale ovariëctomie was geassocieerd met 79% verhoogd risico van CRC (aRR 1,79; 95%-bti 1,33-2,42). Unilaterale ovariëctomie was geassocieerd met statistisch niet-significant verhoogd CRC-risico (aRR 1,25; 95%-bti 0,86-1,82). De associaties werden niet modificeerd door menopauzestatus, baseline HRT-gebruik, hysterectomie, of BMI.
De onderzoekers concluderen dat bilaterale ovariëctomie geassocieerd was met verhoogd CRC-risico.
