Het SEER-cohort telde 610 patiënten met een diagnose tussen begin 2000 en eind 2018, en het Chinese cohort omvatte 678 patiënten met een diagnose tussen 1 juni 2006 en 1 mei 2022. Alle geïncludeerde patiënten waren ouder dan 20 jaar. Zowel in het SEER-cohort (HR 0,65; p=0,0058) als in het Chinese cohort (HR 0,53; p=0,0005) was chirurgie geassocieerd met betere prognose. Dit effect werd ook gezien onder patiënten met lokaal-gevorderde ziekte (SEER: HR 0,61; p=0,024; China: HR 0,59; p=0,029). In het Chinese cohort was chirurgie ook geassocieerd met betere uitkomsten onder patiënten met stadium IB3-IIA ziekte (HR 0,17; p=0,0015).
De onderzoekers concluderen dat chirurgie de uitkomsten van patiënten met kleincellig cervixcarcinoom verbetert.
