Het is 145 geleden dat resident physician Thomas Ramsden Ashworth van het ziekenhuis in Melbourne de resultaten publiceerde van een postmortem bloedonderzoek van een patiënt met ongeveer dertig subcutane tumoren.¹ Hij zag in het bloed cellen die sterk leken op de tumorcellen. Ashworth kwam met de hypothese dat de cellen in het bloed de oorzaak zouden zijn van metastatische verspreiding van kanker.

Het metastaseringsproces wordt nog steeds niet volledig begrepen, schrijven Ashworth’s landgenoten Nicole Caixeiro (Liverpool Health Service, Sydney) en collega’s nu online in Cancer and Metastasis Reviews.² In de publicatie presenteren ze de evidentie voor de rol van circulerende tumorcellen bij de initiëring en progressie van metastatische kanker. A greater understanding of the metastatic potential of CTC’s will open new avenues for therapeutic interventions in the future, aldus de auteurs.
