Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) die samenhangen met immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-therapie kunnen sterk uiteenlopende klinische presentaties hebben. Toepassing van klinische richtlijnen voor irAE-management vereist consistente terminologie. De Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer heeft een multistakeholder group samengeroepen om de gebruikte terminologieën te stroomlijnen. Prof. Jarushka Naidoo (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD) en collega’s publiceren consensus-definities voor ICI-gerelateerde irAEs in het Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer.¹

Het panel bestond uit leading experts op de gebieden van onderzoek, bedrijfsleven, en regelgevende instellingen. Het panel ontwikkelde consensus-definities met behulp van de gemodificeerd Delphi proces. De definities werden vervolgens besproken en verfijnd tijdens consensus-bijeenkomsten, resulterend in consensus over terminologie met betrekking tot natural history van irAEs, patronen van irAEs, en respons op behandeling van irAEs.

De leden van het panel concluderen dat de consensus-definities kunnen bijdragen aan uniforme toepassing van irAE-richtlijnen in de klinische praktijk.
